Sold at a popular retail chain, national experts say the cup includes a part that could pose an oral laceration hazard to consumers.

Stanley’s oversized tumbler cups have risen to viral fame in recent years, which has inspired multiple manufacturers of insulated containers to hype up their own take on the concept. Today, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled 60,000 units of one such product when they were found to pose a serious risk of injury.
The product, made by HALO Branded Solutions Inc., of Sterling, IL and sold widely at the convenience store chain Wawa, was flagged after the company received four complaints of laceration injuries related to the product. As the CPSC explains, the metal straw inside the tumbler is sharp, and may cut consumers’ mouths or fingers.
The recall includes 24-ounce reusable plastic tumblers, all of which reportedly have tan lids and an ombre color scheme. These were available in four colorways: “The Mermaid” which is pink and green, “Island Surf” which is blue and yellow, “Sailor Breeze” which is tan and orange, and “The Galaxy” which is blue and pink. The word “Wawa” is imprinted on all four styles.
It’s reported Wawa stores in Alabama, Washington, D.C., Delaware, Florida, North Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maryland sold the affected product in August 2024 for roughly $13.
The recall comes amid a heightened skepticism regarding the safety of reusable tumbler mugs. Recent social media videos feature former fans of the tumblers who have discontinued their use after learning that some models contained small amounts of lead.
On its website, Stanley responded: “At Stanley, one of the key features of our products is our vacuum insulation technology, which provides consumers with drinkware that keeps beverages at the ideal temperature,” they wrote. “The vacuum insulation in our products has been sealed using an industry standard process that includes pellets, some of which include some lead, and all of which are covered with a durable stainless-steel layer, making them inaccessible to consumers.” They added: “All Stanley products are safe. Rest assured that no lead is present on the surface of any Stanley product that comes into contact with the consumer nor the contents of the product.”
Other rumors have suggested the potential for mold growth inside some tumblers.
As for the current safety recall on the Wawa-sold products, Wawa offers two remedies: The first is to contact HALO to exchange the metal straw for a free replacement silicone straw. The second is to return the cup and straw together to receive a refund in the form of a $15 gift card.
“The original tumbler and metal straw must be returned to HALO to receive the refund. Proof of purchase (receipt) is not required to receive a replacement or refund,” they add. Do not attempt to return the defective products directly to Wawa, the notice advises.
