If you’re using the weekend to gear up for the Super Bowl festivities when the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles go head-to-head on February 9, check the sauces you buy. On Friday afternoon, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced an update on a recently recalled product that you definitely don’t want to place on the buffet line.

On Thursday, January 30, the FDA announced new information related to a mustard recall first initiated on Dec. 17, 2024. Mustard sold under either of two brand names now has a Class III recall designation due to “Ingredient (mustard seeds) tested positive for Salmonella.” Class III recalls are for “a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences.”

The recall includes mustard sold in one-gallon quantities, making it a likely purchase for restaurants and other food providers. The two types of recalled mustards are:

  • Keith Valley mustard, UPC 046045062467, distributed by Ben E Keith Food in Fort Worth, TX
  • Red Boy brand mustard, UPC 071735128154, distributed by Clements Food Company in Oklahoma City, OK

A total of 96 cases of Keith Valley mustard and 864 cases of Red Boy mustard are a part of the recall. (From the advisory it’s unclear how many units were distributed within each case.)

The FDA report indicates that the mustards were distributed to customers in Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, with associated code information 4341CF, 4342CF, 4343CF, 4344CF, 4346CF; CF4341, CF4342, CF4344, and CF4346.

The Cleveland Clinic notes that Salmonella is the most common form of bacterial food poisoning in the U.S. Symptoms may include but are not limited to diarrhea, cramping, fever, nausea, or vomiting.

Though many people are able to recover in a few days from Salmonella food poisoning, people who are younger than 12 months or older than 65, have a compromised immune system, or have sickle cell disease are the most at risk of developing a serious illness related to Salmonella exposure.
