If there’s any good news about all the meat recalls that have happened in the past few months, it’s that authorities are clearly paying heightened attention to the quality and safety standards for the foods Americans are buying.
Earlier this week, nearly 10 million pounds of meat were recalled nationwide. That followed several other recent recalls, including the Boar’s Head lunchmeat recall that was initiated in July and expanded multiple times in the weeks that followed.
Now, following the September recall of deli salads sold at Walmart (which is considered the nation’s biggest supermarket chain), today Kroger announced a recall of 16 products containing chicken and noted this recall also affects products sold at the following markets: Mariano’s, Pick n Save, Metro Market, Dillons, Baker’s, Gerbes, King Soopers, City Market, Fry’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs, QFC, Food4Less, FoodsCo, and Smith’s stores.
It’s reported the following products contain some of the meat that was recalled earlier this week:
- HOME CHEF CHICKEN STREET TACO KIT, 9.93 OZ
- DON PANCHO CHICKEN QUESADILLA MEAL KIT, 22.5 OZ
- DON PANCHO GREEN CHILE CHICKEN ENCHILADA MEAL KIT, 27 OZ
- HOME CHEF ASIAN STYLE CHICKEN STIR FRY, 13 OZ
- REDS CHICKEN N CHEESE BURRITO, 5 OZ
- EL MONTEREY SIGNATURE CHICKEN ENCHILADA, 10.25 OZ
- KROGER CHICKEN CAESER W/BACON BOWL, 5.75 OZ
- KROGER SANTA FE SALAD BOWL, 6 OZ
- KROGER CHICKEN CAESER SALAD BOWL, 12.15 OZ
- KROGER CHEF SALAD CHICKEN & HAM BOWL, 6.7 OZ
- KROGER GARLIC CHICKEN BACON SALAD BOWL, 5.75 OZ
- KROGER SOUTHWEST SALAD BOWL, 11.65 OZ
- KROGER COBB CHICKEN BACON SALAD, 6.4 OZ
- KROGER BLT SALAD BOWL, 6.5 OZ
- KROGER MEXICAN STREET CORN BOWL, 6.4 OZ
- KROGER CHICKEN CAESAR SALAD BOWL, 6 OZ
- KROGER APPLE WALNUT SALAD BOWL, 5.5 OZ
The week’s earlier meat recall was initiated by Oregon-based BrucePac, which supplies to food manufacturers. As the Kroger recall reports: “Products contain chicken supplied to Resers by BrucePac, who announced a Class I recall due to contamination of Listeria monocytogenes, and if eaten, could result in severe illness.” The Cleveland Clinic counts contaminated meat as one of the most common sources of listeriosis and says symptoms include (from the Cleveland Clinic’s website):
- Fever.
- Chills.
- Headache.
- Upset stomach.
- Diarrhea.
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Muscle aches.
- Confusion.
- Loss of balance.
- Convulsions (muscle contractions that you can’t control).
Kroger has publicly stated its plans to keep posts about the recall active until October 18, 2024. They’re advising customers to return the products to their place of purchase for a full refund.
